Jalebee Cartel

Although electronica has been a staple global genre for a while, churning out
brilliant records and even bigger names, it still needs to truly register in the
mass consciousness of the Indian musical scene. The five artists that make up
the Jalebee Cartel, jamming with an arsenal of synths, laptops and percussions,
will leave you thirsting for even greater sonic sustenance.
The definition of a band generally invokes the stereotypical image of a couple
of people blaring out redundant rhythms and the ubiquitous love ballad. But
sometimes all that’s needed is a few good men to spin a traditional concept into
something refreshingly new. It’s the incessant bass, screaming arpeggios and
piercing percussions that truly define the Cartel. Their sound is all about
paying homage to their first love, music, and particularly about an explosive
electronic experience. Perhaps IDM or just “electronica” could define the
resulting product, but then, it isn’t about neat packaging. It’s about pushing
the envelope and fusing influences to create a distinctive brand of urban Indian
dance music.
The one-of-a-kind experience of the live act and DJ set is a blend of the
different backgrounds of the Cartel’s members. Arjun Vagale manages the laptop
and mixing while Ash Roy brings in vocals and tablas. DJ Madhav aka Kohra joins
in with electronic drums and percussions, Ashvin Mani Sharma is on the laptop
and synths, and G ‘force’ Arjun grooves on guitars and provides backing vocals.
The live act combines the Cartel’s own compositions with electronic tunes from
clubs all over the world, traversing the entire sonic spectrum while throwing in
ethnic Indian sounds for good measure. The Jalebee Cartel doesn’t care whether
you’re a seasoned club fiend or electronica virgin---it simply believes in
manipulating the masses towards euphoric heights, leading them from mellow
atmospheric sounds to driving beats ‘n' breaks, eventually erupting in a
psychedelic frenzy.
The collective has steadily garnered an impressive list of achievements that
include the MTV Style Awards 2005 “Theme Music”, Smirnoff Experience Festival
2005, remixing/performing at India Fashion Week 2003 / 2004 / 2005 / 2006, doing
the background scores for numerous TV Shows and sound designing and creating an
original soundtrack for the indie film Cherry on Top, which was selected for
numerous international film festivals. They are also actively involved with the
super club Ministry Of Sound, New Delhi, as Arjun Vagale handles their
International DJ Bookings.
The group has showcased its production skills through various releases with
labels such as Pure Substance Records, SoulTribe Records, Moon Tribal Records,
