RED
& BLUERed & Blue (aka Adam & Jay) are two mates from South London. Before
they met Jay misspent his youth DJing at illegal parties and as many bars and
pirate radio stations that would have him whilst Adam misspent his locked away
in a little dark room with his synths and samplers. It didn't take them long to
realise that with Jay's knowledge of all things House and Adam's of all things
Techno they could put some pretty interesting tracks together........
Their first, titled "Until the End" was released in 2001 on the Suspect Package
label and was received well by a wide range of DJ's including Justin Drake from
Peace Division, Jody from Way Out West and Cream resident Matt Hardwick. The
original mix was a slice of peak time progressive house with two darker, twisted
mixes on the flip.
Their next two releases "Better Than Life / UTOC" & "Abyss" were released on 555
in 2002 and this is where things really started to take off. People were
starting to notice of the duo's style of hypnotic, percussive, drum driven
house. Their third release on 555 "Tyranny of the Beat" was released in 2003 and
this simply confirmed what people were starting to realise.... These guys know
how to twist up the dance floor!! Support was now coming from all over the place
- Tom Stephan (Super Chumbo), Peace Division, Saeed & Palash, Deep Dish, John
Digweed, Steve Lawler, Colin Dale, P&Z, Pete Gawtry, Hardy Heller, Dave Begg,
Jimmy Van M, Danny Tenaglia and Kingkade to name but a few. It was these quality
releases (amongst others) that helped to establish 555 Records as one of the
UK's finest up and coming underground labels.
It was on the back of these that Red & Blue were called in to remix for Release
Records, Climax Records and Minimal Records. Red & Blue's dark and pumping
interpretations of Phasebase's "Right Behind You" (Climax), "Causin' Trouble"
(Release) and Panoptic's "Harmonic Germs" (Minimal) won them even more friends,
glowing reviews and numerous chart entries and plays from all around the world.
It was as a direct result of these successes that they signed three tracks with
well established label Tune-Inn and two with UK newcomers Connected Records.
Their first release with Tune-Inn Records was "Quintos" which was released over
2 x 12's in early 2004. It featured remixes from Nowhere, Phasebase and James
Harcourt. This went down very well, charting high in the Balance Record Pool and
it even found it's way into a few compilations - Max Graham's "Shine" in the US,
Greg Silver's "Progressive" over in Germany and Michael K's "Labyrinth Selection
005" in Switzerland.
Next up Red & Blue moved to seminal progressive label Limbo Records for the
white label release of "Falling". A grinding tribal houser with vocals supplied
by Cathy Dennis (ssshhhh, don't tell her). Feedback for both the original mix
and Red & Blue's own "Darker Dub" was outstanding. It charted in the top ten in
both the Plastic Fantastic and Tune-Inn Buzz/Hype charts. DJ support has been
from all the usual suspects including Peace Division, Tom Stephan, Kingkade,
Barry Gilbey, Anthony Pappa and Hernan Cattaneo.
Not content just to sit back and relax, Adam & Jay came up with what will
probably be their biggest track to date - a peak-time monster called "Driller".
The track was snapped up straight away by Minimal Records and early feedback
from CDR has been amazing. Andy Jarrod (3 Beat) played a 7 hour set in Moscow
and listed the track in his top 5 big tunes for the night! Remix will come from
non other that Choo Choo Records head honcho Barry Gilbey.
Just to round things off nicely the boys have remixed tracks for Hardy Heller's
On a Mission label over in Germany, Pure Music Productions and Pure Substance.
In-between all this production the boys also find time to run their new digital
label "Adjust Recordings". They are only a few releases in but already the label
is gaining support from all the big players - G.Pal, Tom Stephan & Kamisshake to
name but a few.
If that wasn't enough the boys also promote there own occasional club night; the
aptly named "Sleaze", venues that have homed this night of twisted tribal mayhem
over the past few years have included the near legendary Dog Star in Brixton,
Spirit in EC1 and LowDown in WC2. They also regularly guest DJ on Brisbane's
4zzz (102.1FM) Crucial Cutz dance show in Australia, as well as hosting their
own regular two hour show, entitled 'shake', on the popular Internet radio
station Eccentric Beats.
You can experience the boys sound every month on their radio show “Shake” on
Mercurysessions.com.
You can currently find Red & Blue sitting in their little studio working on a
raft of follow up tracks and yet more remixes; and if you're really very lucky
you may just stumble across them spinning their twisted rhythms at some of the
UK's more discerning underground venues
